This is a great winter project and is really easy to make. I used an old Christmas postcard that I copied onto fabric paper and then glued onto the hat.
Materials:
- 1 yard of medium weight canvas fabric
- black paint
- old post card or anything you would like to use
Step 1.
Cut a piece of canvas measuring 9″ X 18″. Fold it in half and stitch using a 1/2 inch seam allowance as shown.
Step 2.
Cut two 10″ circles. Put them together (wrong sides together) and stitch around the circle 1/4″ from the edge. Set the hat on top of the brim and trace around as shown.
Step 3.
Draw another line 5/8″ inside the other circle. Cut along the inside line. Make little cuts all the way around the circle as shown. This will make it easier to attach to the hat.
Step 4.
Cut out a 6″ circle for top of hat. Make little cuts around the top circle to ease in fullness when you attach top to side of hat. Pin hat top to hat side and then stitch into place using a 1/2″ seam allowance.
Step 5.
Attach hat to brim as shown and then paint the whole thing black. Scuff up the surface with sandpaper to give it an aged look.

Step 6.
Print old post card or picture etc.. on fabric paper. (I found this old post card at a junk store for 50 cents.)  Cut it out and peel off backing. Apply glue to back of picture and then put it on the front of the hat.Â
Step 7.
Tear a strip of gauze (or use ribbon) and tie it around the hat as shown. I added a piece of fir garland and some fake berries but use your imagination and put whatever you like.
