This cover is an easy project that I did to cover an ugly but still sturdy stool. The look can be easily changed by using different fabrics and trims to fit your decor.
Materials:
- Approximately 2 yards of fabric.Â
- piping to match fabric. I make my own but you can buy it pre-made.
- stool
Step 1.
Measure top of stool and add 5/8″ all the way around for a seam allowance. Cut out top piece from fabric based on your measurments.
Step 2.Â
Pin piping to edge of top piece as shown and then stitch it into place using your sewing machines zipper foot. Stitch as close to the piping edge as you can.
Step 3. Â
Cut another piece of fabric 6″ wide and long enough to fit around the stool. Allow enough fullness so that it won’t fit too tight and add a 5/8″ seam allowance.
Step 4.
Stitch 6″ wide piece to the top piece putting right sides together. Stitch as close to the piping as you can using your machines zipper foot. Cut another piece of piping and pin it to the bottom of the 6″ piece. Stitch it into place.
Step 5.
Cut a another piece of fabric that is long enough to fit all the way around your stool twice. This will allow you to gather it so that it looks like a skirt. If you want a more masculine look,  just make it the same length as the 6″ wide piece so that it hangs straight. If you want a gathered skirt you will need to sew a basting stitch across the top of your skirt piece about 5/8 ” away from the edge. Sew another line of basting across the top about 1/4 ” from the edge. Carefully pull on the two threads so that the fabric becomes gathered.Â
Step 6.Â
Pin the gathered skirt to the bottom of the 6″ wide piece adjusting the gathering stitches to fit. Stitch into place as shown in picture.
I added lace to the bottom and sewed three fabric covered buttons on all four corners but there are many different options so use your imagination and have fun with it.
